Course overview

Business teams often have data spread across spreadsheets, operational systems and published extracts, yet dashboards still fail to answer the questions leaders ask: which customers are at risk, where performance is changing, and what action is required. This course helps analysts move beyond static Tableau reports and build trusted, interactive dashboards that combine well-prepared data, sound calculations and deliberate visual design. Participants learn to diagnose common problems such as duplicated records, misleading aggregations, slow worksheets and filters that produce inconsistent results.

Over five days, participants develop Tableau workbooks from raw data through to governed dashboard publication. They use Tableau Desktop to connect and model data, create joins, relationships and unions, build calculations with logical functions, date functions, table calculations and Level of Detail expressions, and select charts that communicate comparison, distribution, composition and trend accurately. Advanced sessions cover parameters, actions, sets, dashboard navigation, performance recording, extract optimisation and row-level security concepts. Tableau Prep Builder is used to clean, reshape and document data flows before analysis.

Instructor-led demonstrations are followed by structured build exercises using a realistic commercial performance case. Participants work through requirements, define KPIs, prepare source data, build reusable calculations and prototype dashboard interactions. They finish with a publish-ready Tableau dashboard pack: a cleaned data flow, documented KPI definitions, an interactive executive dashboard and a checklist for publishing to Tableau Server or Tableau Cloud. A certificate is issued on completion.

The course is best suited to analysts and reporting professionals who already create basic Tableau views and now need to produce reliable, decision-ready dashboards for operational managers, business leaders or clients. It is equally valuable for teams standardising how they design, test and govern Tableau reporting.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Connect, profile and model multiple data sources using Tableau relationships, joins, unions and extracts
  • Prepare repeatable data-cleaning workflows in Tableau Prep Builder using pivots, splits, aggregations and output steps
  • Create calculated fields using logical, string, date and aggregation functions for defined business KPIs
  • Apply Level of Detail expressions and table calculations to produce cohort, variance, ranking and running-total analysis
  • Design chart selections and dashboard layouts that communicate trends, distributions, comparisons and exceptions accurately
  • Build interactive dashboards using parameters, sets, filter actions, highlight actions and navigation buttons
  • Optimise a Tableau workbook using Performance Recording, extract design, context filters and worksheet simplification
  • Produce a publish-ready dashboard pack containing KPI definitions, a Tableau Prep flow and documented governance checks

Who should attend

  • Data Analysts — who need to turn operational data into interactive, decision-ready Tableau dashboards
  • Business Intelligence Analysts — who build governed reports and need stronger calculation, modelling and performance skills
  • Reporting Analysts — who must replace recurring spreadsheet packs with maintainable self-service dashboards
  • Commercial Analysts — who need to analyse sales, margin, customer and product performance with drill-down capability
  • Operations Analysts — who monitor service, capacity, quality or process KPIs and must expose exceptions quickly
  • Analytics Managers — who set dashboard standards and need to review workbook quality, usability and publication readiness

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should already be comfortable using Tableau Desktop to connect to a file or data source, create basic worksheets, apply filters and build simple charts. They should understand rows and columns in tabular data, common business measures such as revenue and margin, and the difference between dimensions and measures. Experience with Excel formulas or basic SQL is helpful because the course uses calculated fields and data preparation logic. Participants need not know programming, R, Python, advanced statistics or database administration. Prior Tableau Prep or Tableau Server experience is not required; both are introduced through guided practical work.

Training methodology

Each day combines instructor-led Tableau demonstrations with guided builds in Tableau Desktop and Tableau Prep Builder. Participants work from a commercial performance dataset containing sales, customer, product and target data, progressively converting it into a dashboard for executive and operational users. Short case discussions examine KPI ambiguity, misleading visual choices and publication risks. Pair review sessions use a dashboard quality checklist to test usability and calculation logic. On the final day, each participant refines an end-to-end dashboard pack and creates an application plan for a live reporting requirement.

Course outline

Day 1: Data foundations and analytical workbook design

  • Tableau project workflow from business question to published dashboard
  • Connecting to Excel files, text files and relational data sources
  • Dimensions, measures, discrete fields and continuous fields
  • Data roles, default properties and geographic field assignment
  • Relationships versus joins and their effect on aggregation
  • Unions, pivoted data and extract versus live connections
  • Worksheet structure, Show Me limitations and analytical chart selection

Workshop: Build a sales-performance analysis workbook that connects multiple source tables, validates record grain and produces initial trend, product and regional views.

Day 2: Data preparation and robust Tableau calculations

  • Profiling data quality issues with Tableau data grids and field summaries
  • Tableau Prep Builder cleaning steps, field splits and data type changes
  • Pivoting wide operational data into analysis-ready rows
  • Aggregation, joins and output steps in Tableau Prep flows
  • Calculated fields using IF, CASE, IIF and logical operators
  • Date calculations for periods, year-to-date and prior-period comparison
  • Null handling, aliases, groups, bins and data validation checks

Workshop: Create a Tableau Prep flow that cleans and reshapes sales and targets data, then build validated KPI calculations for revenue, margin, attainment and variance.

Day 3: Advanced analysis with LOD expressions and table calculations

  • Order of operations and its implications for filters and calculations
  • FIXED, INCLUDE and EXCLUDE Level of Detail expressions

Frequently asked questions

You should be able to create basic worksheets, drag dimensions and measures into a view, and apply ordinary filters in Tableau Desktop. The course starts by reinforcing data modelling and workbook design, but moves quickly into calculations, LOD expressions and interactive dashboards.

For live online delivery, participants need a laptop capable of running Tableau Desktop and Tableau Prep Builder, with the required software installed before the first session. For classroom delivery, the training team will confirm whether workstations are provided or whether participants should bring their own device.

It can suit an experienced Excel analyst who understands formulas, pivots and business measures, provided they have already completed basic Tableau training or have equivalent Tableau Desktop exposure. It is not designed as a first introduction to charts, data fields or Tableau navigation.

Fundamentals training focuses on connecting data and creating basic views. This course concentrates on the work required for production-quality analysis: data preparation, LOD expressions, table calculations, action-driven dashboards, performance tuning and publication governance.

The methods apply directly to recurring sales, finance, operations, customer and service reporting. Participants learn reusable patterns for preparing source data, defining KPIs once, allowing controlled drill-down and testing dashboards before stakeholders rely on them.

You leave with an interactive Tableau dashboard developed from the course case, a Tableau Prep data-cleaning flow, documented KPI definitions and a publication checklist. These materials can be adapted as templates for an internal dashboard project.
