Course overview
Category buyers are expected to secure savings, continuity, innovation and responsible supply outcomes from a limited supplier base. That requires more than running tenders and monitoring spend: buyers must distinguish strategic suppliers from transactional vendors, understand supplier economics, set clear governance, and intervene before service, quality or capacity problems affect the category plan. This course addresses the practical challenge of managing supplier relationships after award while retaining commercial leverage and evidence-based control.
Participants learn to segment suppliers using spend, risk, dependency and value criteria; create supplier relationship management (SRM) strategies by category; and design operating rhythms for strategic, preferred and approved suppliers. The course covers supplier scorecards, quarterly business reviews, service-level agreements, corrective action plans, joint business planning, supplier development, negotiation preparation and escalation. Participants practise turning operational, quality, delivery, ESG and cost data into supplier performance conversations that produce accountable actions rather than retrospective reporting.
Delivery combines instructor-led models with category-specific cases, supplier review simulations, spreadsheet-based scorecard design and peer challenge sessions. Each participant works on a live or realistic category and develops a Supplier Relationship Management Playbook: a supplier segmentation matrix, governance calendar, scorecard, QBR agenda, stakeholder map, risk register and 90-day implementation plan. This provides a usable framework for improving supplier performance immediately after the course.
The programme is designed for experienced procurement professionals who own category strategies, manage strategically important suppliers or need to formalise supplier governance across a portfolio. Managers gain a consistent approach for linking supplier relationships to measurable category, operational and risk objectives.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Segment suppliers using spend, risk, dependency, capability and value-creation criteria
- Build a category-specific SRM strategy with differentiated supplier engagement models

Who should attend
- Category Managers — who must turn category strategies into stronger supplier performance and value delivery
- Category Buyers — who manage supplier portfolios after contract award and need structured governance
- Strategic Sourcing Managers — who need to protect negotiated value through post-award supplier management
- Supplier Relationship Managers — who require practical scorecards, QBR structures and escalation methods
- Procurement Business Partners — who align internal stakeholders around supplier priorities and decisions
- Procurement Team Leaders — who need a consistent SRM operating model across categories
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience in procurement, sourcing, contract management or category buying, including familiarity with purchase-to-pay terminology, supplier selection and basic contract clauses. They should be able to interpret spend data, service or delivery performance measures, and simple spreadsheet reports. Prior experience participating in supplier meetings, negotiations or reviews is helpful. A laptop with Microsoft Excel is recommended for scorecard exercises. The course does not require prior use of SAP Ariba, Power BI, formal project-management certification, advanced financial modelling or previous training in ISO 44001.
Training methodology
The instructor introduces SRM frameworks through short teaching sessions, then applies them to realistic category scenarios involving delivery failure, cost pressure, supplier dependency and innovation opportunities. Participants build segmentation matrices and scorecards in Excel, analyse supplier evidence, and rehearse QBR and escalation conversations in small groups. Case discussions compare different governance models for strategic and routine suppliers. Each day adds a component to an individual Supplier Relationship Management Playbook, culminating in peer review and a practical 90-day application plan.
