Course overview
Business teams often wait for analysts or IT to answer routine questions because source data is spread across spreadsheets, operational systems and governed data applications. Qlik Sense enables self-service exploration, but poorly designed apps can produce inconsistent measures, slow reloads, duplicate logic and reports that users cannot trust. This course equips professionals to build governed Qlik Sense applications that let users investigate sales, operations, finance or service performance through the associative data model rather than fixed report paths.
Participants learn to profile and load data, create efficient associations, resolve synthetic keys and circular references, and use the Data Manager and Data Load Editor appropriately. They build reusable master dimensions and measures, apply set analysis for period comparisons and exception reporting, and design interactive sheets with filters, drill-downs, bookmarks and visualisations selected for a decision-making purpose. The course also covers reload tasks, Qlik Cloud spaces, publishing workflows, section access principles and practical validation techniques for reconciling Qlik results with source-system totals.
Instructor demonstrations are followed by guided build exercises using a realistic operational dataset. Each participant develops a multi-sheet Qlik Sense analytics app, including documented data model, load script, KPI measures, analysis views and a validation checklist. The final workshop requires participants to present a self-service dashboard design, explain its calculations and identify the governance controls needed before publishing it to business users.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should be comfortable working with business datasets in Excel or a similar spreadsheet tool and should understand tables, rows, columns, data types, basic joins and common business measures such as totals, averages and percentages. Prior experience using Qlik Sense to explore an existing app is helpful, as is familiarity with one reporting or BI tool. No programming background, SQL expertise or prior Qlik Sense development certification is required. The course teaches Qlik load-script syntax from practical examples, but it is not intended for participants who are entirely new to data concepts or spreadsheet analysis.
Training methodology
The instructor uses short demonstrations in Qlik Sense, followed by individual build tasks on a shared business case involving sales, customer and operational data. Participants inspect source files, model associations, write and test load-script statements, and compare alternative chart and calculation designs. Peer review is used to test whether a dashboard answers a stated management question without misleading users. Each day closes with a practical artefact, and the final session combines these into a publish-ready app plan covering data ownership, refreshes, access and validation.

Day 1: Qlik Sense architecture and associative modelling
- Qlik Sense application structure, hubs, sheets and analysis workflow
- Associative engine behaviour and green, white and grey selection states
- Source-data profiling for grain, keys, dates and data-quality issues
- Fact tables, dimension tables and star-schema modelling principles
- Data Manager versus Data Load Editor use cases
- Key-field naming conventions and controlled table associations
- Data Model Viewer for inspecting tables, fields and associations
Workshop: Build an initial Qlik Sense app from sales and customer files and produce a reviewed data-model diagram showing intended associations.
Day 2: Loading, transforming and governing data
- Qlik load-script structure, script sections and reload sequence
- LOAD statements, resident loads and preceding loads
- Field renaming, aliasing and data-type conversion functions
- Join, concatenate, keep and mapping-load techniques
- Date parsing and master calendar generation
- Synthetic keys, circular references and link-table resolution
- Reload validation using row counts, distinct keys and reconciliation totals
Workshop: Transform and combine three operational source extracts in the Data Load Editor, then resolve deliberate modelling defects and document validation results.
Day 3: Measures, set analysis and reusable business logic

Workshop: Create a governed KPI library containing revenue, margin, target variance and prior-period measures, with test cases for each expression.
Day 4: Interactive dashboard and self-service analysis design

Workshop: Design and build three linked sheets for an operations manager, then conduct a peer usability test and revise the navigation and visual cues.
Day 5: Publishing, security and operational application delivery
